Housing Scavenger Hunt - Independent Living Activity

This island-themed scavenger hunt helps students explore where and how they might live after high school. As they “navigate the island,” they’ll explore real-world topics like location, housing types, monthly costs, transportation, amenities, and neighborhood safety. Along the way, they’ll build critical decision-making and research skills that support a successful transition to adulthood.

Two Formats for Maximum Flexibility

Island-Themed Visual Map: A colorful, map-like layout where students visit different “island destinations” representing key housing decisions. (Color + grayscale versions included!)
Linear Worksheet Option: A clear, step-by-step format for students who prefer a more traditional worksheet layout. (Print + digital versions available.)

How It Works

Students choose a location they might live in after high school—based on education, training, career goals, or personal priorities. Then they research and record:

  • Where they want to live and why

  • What type of housing fits their lifestyle and budget

  • Monthly rent, deposits, and utility estimates

  • Transportation options and commute time

  • Amenities that matter most (laundry, Wi-Fi, outdoor space, etc.)

  • Neighborhood safety and proximity to important places

  • A final reflection: Is this a realistic option? What’s exciting? What are the next steps?

Each section of the island map represents a stage in the research journey. Students collect details, reflect on trade-offs, and gain awareness of what it takes to secure housing as a young adult.
